Two weeks ago, in my little fish pond, a dragonfly was desperately trying to find a location that suited him for his eggs.
I'm not sure the foam stone out of the water is best. But she had her sights set on this small piece of water, sparse shoots in water, more suitable for spawning. It was probably his last days, having already torn wing third before coming days too cold. This dragonfly is, I think, an imperial Anax (Anax imperator).

Below,

  • The steel blue couple names rather 'young lady' (in french), Coenagrion of its learned name.
  • The red dragonfly is blood red Sympétrum (Sympetrum sanguineum)

What we said in 1690 in the dictionary Furetière under the single term 'Demoiselle' (Young lady) :

YOUNG LADY. Species of small insect. This is a verse in the form of nymph, who has two eyes so big, they almost his entire head, and four wings that are admirable run with a very high speed, because he takes his prey in the air. He has two teeth contained within, with which he pinches very strong. Its coupling with the female doing flying in the air, and doing somersaults, the end of the female tail curving around the middle of the male body where his penis is located, and then the receiving the end of its tail. This insect also has two horns, and he throws his eggs in water, which resemble those of fish, where you can see out to an infinity of six feet. It then flows toward the wheel, which was previously crawling & swimming. Each of its six legs is composed of six parts hairy throughout, the end of which is armed with two nails or two greenhouses. The stomach is divided into ten rings. The place where the chest joins with the belly out four buttons that swell, and contain its wings such as buttons plants contain flowers. The Latins call Libella or perla. Swammerdam actually see seventeen kinds, and said Rondelet inappropriately named her cicada water or cicada aquatica, instead of a grasshopper or water locusta aquatica, speaks Moufet. Jonston called forsicula aquatica, is that the same Moufet called water flea, pulex or marinus. It is also known that Mr. Redy aquatic scorpion.

You will find in the French version, the engravings and the more complete article on dragonflies,
extracted from a dictionary of 1839
