For the week of the All Saints' Day, some looks on sovereigns naked recumbent effigies,
exposed in St Denis's basilica near Paris.

 

Most of the sculptures of these graves were ordered either by very recumbent effigies in anticipation of their death, or by a close relation of the royal house after their death.
Their body bare thus corresponded to a clear will to show them so, such as had to be their skin.
Nowadays, such representations would hardly be accepted, especially on behalf of sovereign or other leaders of nations.

And below some words of the 17th century, transcription of the Commemorative tablet of Marguerite de Valois,
wife of Henri VI, rejected in 1600, died in 1615. And among which the last 4 verses are of an infinite sadness :
Wife without husband, and Queen without kingdom
Empty shadow of past, big and noble ghost,
She dragged the rests of her fate,
And saw up to her name dying before its death.

Plaque commémorative apposée dans la crypte de la Basisique de St denis

This brilliant flower of the tree of Valois,
In whom died the name of so many powerful Roy,
Marguerite, for whom so many laurels florewed,
In seen flowers and laurels, on the head to dry,
And by a fatal blow, lilies get loose from it.
Regrettably ! The Royal circle with which had crowned her
Tumultuously and untidy a too quick marriage,
Worn-out at the same time in front of her falling feet
Left her as a trunk degraded by winds.
Wife without husband, and Queen without kingdom
Empty shadow of past, big and noble ghost,
She dragged the rests of her fate,
And saw up to her name dying before its death.

 

And little in the same spirit of the look without make-up on the death, with a kind of black humor,
one of the paintings which decorates the bridge Spreuerbrucke (bridge of the dance of the deaths),
to Montreux in Switzerland.
