Beaming Marseille

Statue of the trainer of Louis Botinelly's bear cubs in Marseille - © Norbert Pousseur

Symbolic image for Marseille : a young ephebe on the esplanade of Tourette,
dominating the harbor, playing cheerfully the tambourine, i
n front of the statue of the virgin perched on Notre Dame de la Garde...
Marseille opened to the World but which transformed its old fort which dominates the city
in a severe monument, a manifesto of the religious power.

Marseille, brilliant city of sun.

The city of Marseille is very alive, multiple..
As any big city, the media speak about her through news items, which go hazards of the activities of its port, its club of soccer, settlings of scores armed between rival gangs of the districts of the periphery, but also its artistic manifestations and its architectural revival.

Sometimes stopping me in its station during change of train, I had the opportunity to travel it, like a tourist, by collecting some views. Those are published here who best seem to me to represent this city in its positive side.

This series completes three articles of archives which I published (in French)
on my other site of the Photographic visits :
- Marseille through old prints
- Marseille in 1761 by Niebuhr
- The History of Marseille until 1830
- Marseille in 1830 by Abel Hugo

Port of Marseille by Rouargue - © Norbert Pousseur     Port of Marseille by Thomas Allom - © Norbert Pousseur
Illustration of Rouargue for the History of Marseille                       Illustration of T. Allom for Marseille in 1830 by In. Hugo

Both engravings above, realized in the same period and illustrating quoted articles, are rather similar, although that of the right (Thomas Allom) results from a closer but higher point of view.
They are published in more large format in their respective page.
