The fashion according to the transformations of the society

The fashion from 1828 till 1870, rerproductions of engravings - © Norbert Pousseur

Evolution of the women's fashion between 1828 and 1870. The young woman in pink of 1828 wears the lightest dress.
The following ones, 1836, 44 and 52 are more cumbersome but still relatively free.
2 last ones, on 1869 and 70 (le time of the war of 1870) give an impression of heaviness and rigidity.
We pass in France of toilet full of lightness, in heavy cumbersome dresses,
and it over a period of 50 years, from 1830 till 1880.
Reproductions extracted from diverse publications of Fashion.

The old fashion and its young women's engravings allows to follow the evolutions of the society.

Owner of several publications of fashion, I published at the moment about fifty engravings (in French),
on one of my other sites, to emphasize the charm of these drawings of time.

In another spirit, this page tries to show that these engravings accentuate the evolutions of our societies,
clothes being good a marker of the spirit of the times.

In 1870 the 'Parisian' fashion was doubtless worn only by a 'elite' but at least as it was met these ladies and sirs in streets and parks, in a common way, as shows it diverse engravings ofthis period. Furthermore, the newspapers of fashion of this period detailed the patterns, so that every person who could allow himself the purchase of these magazines can realize or make realize skirts, dresses, blouses and shown overcoats.

At the moment, we see clothes of fashion designers in television reports, but where as it is worn them if it is not in private parties... It is certainly the sign of a more elitist, less democratic society... The current newspapers of fashion make, them, rather the point on the tendencies of the daily ready-to-wear clothings. So, at present, the clothes of a totally upbeat way style are the ones of the fashion design, while those met in streets are very often unisex and little creative and very utilitarian (but without forgetting the people for whom the dress seems to be the reflection of a withdrawal or on a community).

Personally the Fashion does not matter to me (for myself and for the others). On the other hand it seems to me obvious that it is about a marker of society. I makes here the visual report - I leave to others a work of reflections on the social parameters which ensues from it.

From left to right, a group of middle-class persons of 1760, a middle-class person of 1780 and a 'supernatural' of 1810.
We see here also, in a almost more blatant way, the state of the society on the eve of the Revolution, through its clothes,
and how it is transformed 30 years later.
Engravings extracted from 'Suits coloured by the Parisian in all the periods', complement to 'Paris through centuries'
of Henri Gourdon de Genouillac.

An inhabitant of Pays de Caux, inhabitants of Macon, in the background, a couple of Breton, mountain dwellers of the Hautes-Pyrénées, couple of Parisian,
and a Savoyard young person.
The couple of Parisian is represented in toilet such as we found proposed in all the fashion magazines of this time.

Parisians visiting the Zoological garden in 1897 - Long severe dress which can be decorated by a more fancy blouse (woman in the background) and with hats overloaded with flowers. A heavy style which was next in the same period of the much more bravely free dresses (see the reproduction below).      Photograph Norbert Pousseur

The culotte was born, it seems, with the use of the bicycle by the ladies.
We have here the representation of the scene of the marriage in 1897
of Mister Pécolle and Miss Latourne - .It is specified in the article
of the 'Small newspaper' that the men wore silk breeches.

Other reflection of the 1890s - This reproduction of Ferdinand Roybet's painting,
showed in 1893, stages a farmer, in its dress of every day, laughing in the advances of a handsome hunk in brightly coloured coat.

In fact the clothes of every day of this farmer could be contemporary,
while the more sought dress of the man is well the one of a bygone days.       Photograph Norbert Pousseur

In the year 2010 the fashion is very minimalist, the daily fashion being marked,
as here, by light details, as the false wears of the jeans, the bottoms of the pants turned,
the carefully chosen bag, the small jacket to the collar of fur.

Another aspect of the current utilitarian fashion which hides nothing of the anatomy of the person; simple short skirt in cotton, without any decoration nor effect of manufacturing ; We respect simply here the fact that a woman owes wear a skirt (or a dress) according to a custom which remains anchored well in our societies.      Photograph Norbert Pousseur

But the feminine, reference dress in our contemporary cities, stays this style of dress, leaving the woman free of its movements,
while being of a shape very studied in all its details.

I think that this view reflects well enough the current state of the women's fashion,
in cities in the mode of western life.
3/4 of the ladies are in pants or in tights, and if there is skirt or dress,
this one must be easy to wear.
